This privacy policy explains how WordPressHosting.nz collects, uses and protects personal information when you visit the site. We handle personal information in line with New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles. WordPressHosting.nz is an information site about WordPress hosting, domain names and running a website. We do not sell hosting, run customer accounts or take payments.
In short: we collect as little information about you as we can. We do not use advertising networks, behavioural tracking, a newsletter or analytics tools such as Google Analytics. The only personal information we handle is what you choose to send us when you get in touch, plus a small amount of technical data needed to deliver the site securely.
Who is responsible for your information
WordPressHosting.nz is represented by the website’s owner, who is responsible for the personal information collected through the site.
If you have a question about how your information is handled, or want to make a privacy request, you can reach us through our contact page.
What personal information we collect
We collect two kinds of information.
Information you send us
When you contact us, we handle:
- Your email address
- Your name, if you give it
- The content of your message
- Any other details you choose to include
You decide what to share. Please do not send sensitive details, such as hosting account passwords, login credentials or payment information. We never need them to answer a question.
Technical information collected automatically
When you visit the site, some technical data is collected automatically by our hosting provider, Hetzner, and our security and delivery service, Cloudflare:
- IP address, used to deliver pages and to protect the site against misuse
- Browser type and version
- Operating system
- Referring page, meaning the page you arrived from
- Date and time of your visit
- Pages viewed on the site
This data is collected through server logs and necessary cookies. It is used only to keep the site running and to defend it against technical attacks. It is not used to build a profile of you as a visitor.
Cookies
We use necessary cookies only. These cookies are needed for the site to work and to be delivered securely. Because we set nothing beyond that, the site does not show a cookie banner. That is a deliberate choice.
The necessary cookies come from three sources:
- Cloudflare: security and delivery cookies, for example to tell real visitors apart from automated bots
- LiteSpeed Cache: cookies that help cached pages load quickly and correctly
- WordPress: core cookies that the site software needs to function
We do not use:
We do not use:
We do not use:
- Google Analytics or any other analytics tool that tracks individual visitors
- Advertising cookies or behavioural tracking
- Social media plugins that track you
- Marketing or retargeting trackers
- Third-party cookies beyond the technical services listed above
You can delete existing cookies and block new ones at any time in your browser settings. Doing so may affect how the site works or how it is protected.
Why we use your information
Each use of personal information has a specific purpose:
- Replying to messages. We use the details you send us to answer your question or act on your feedback.
- Running and delivering the site. Technical data is processed so that pages can be served to your device.
- Security and protection against misuse. Cloudflare processes IP addresses and technical data to block attacks, spam and automated abuse.
- Understanding search performance. We use Google Search Console, which shows aggregated data about how the site appears in Google Search. It does not identify individual visitors.
- Meeting legal requirements. We may need to keep or disclose information where New Zealand law requires it.
We do not use your information for any purpose unrelated to these, and we do not use it for marketing.
How long we keep your information
We keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected for:
- Messages you send us: up to three years after the last contact, then deleted, unless the law requires us to keep them for longer
- Hetzner server logs: normally removed automatically within 14 to 30 days
- Cloudflare security logs: normally kept for around 30 days
- Necessary cookies: from session cookies, which are removed when you close your browser, to longer-lived security cookies that can last up to about a year
Once information is no longer needed, we delete it or make it anonymous.
Who we share information with
We never sell personal information, and we do not pass it to anyone for advertising or marketing. A small number of third-party service providers handle data on our behalf so that the site can operate:
- Hetzner Online GmbH (web hosting). Processes server logs and IP addresses as part of the hosting service. Location: Germany (European Union). Privacy policy
- Cloudflare, Inc. (security and content delivery). Processes IP addresses and technical data. Location: United States, with servers worldwide. Privacy policy
- Google LLC (Search Console). Provides aggregated search performance data. Location: United States. Privacy policy
These providers hold or process information for us, and we remain responsible for it under the Privacy Act 2020. In rare cases we may also have to disclose information to a public authority where the law requires it.
Information held outside New Zealand
Our service providers are based overseas. Hetzner stores data in Germany, and Cloudflare and Google may process data in the United States and other countries. This means the technical data described above is held and processed outside New Zealand.
We choose established providers that publish their own privacy and security commitments, and we limit what they receive to what is needed to host, protect and deliver the site.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information against loss, unauthorised access, alteration and misuse:
- HTTPS encryption across the whole site
- Cloudflare’s security infrastructure, including DDoS protection, a web application firewall and bot management
- Regular updates to WordPress, plugins and themes
- Restricted access to the site’s administration area
- Hosting with Hetzner, whose data centres are certified to ISO/IEC 27001
- Secure storage of email correspondence
If a privacy breach occurs that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected as soon as practicable, as the Privacy Act 2020 requires.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Ask whether we hold personal information about you, and to see it
- Ask us to correct information you believe is wrong
- Ask us to attach a statement of the correction you sought, if we do not agree to make it
To use these rights, get in touch through our contact page. We will respond as soon as we reasonably can, and no later than 20 working days after receiving your request.
You can also ask us to delete the messages you have sent us, and we will do so unless we are legally required to keep them.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please contact us first so that we have the chance to put it right.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, New Zealand’s privacy regulator.
Children
WordPressHosting.nz is written for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to the site or to the law. The current version is always published on this page with the date it was last updated. If we make a significant change, we will say so clearly on the site.
